House Llorelin is the clan name of the descendants of Fateweaver Lyanna Llorelin's followers. The families Sae'fael, Sae'ithil, and Sae'el are renowned for their ability to read the "threads of fate" and harrow the outcome of political decisions. As such, there has always been a Fateseer of House Llorelin in the service of nearly every clan in the country, and they are known for their lack of interest in political power, which has earned them the moniker "The Servant House".
History and culture[]
Founded by Fateweaver Lyanna Llorelin, legendary diviner, the House Llorelin is one of the oldest in Llorealia. The Fateweaver never mothered any children, and passed the helm of the clan to her servant and most devout follower Syanith Sae'fael, whose family holds the title to this day. The ascension of Sarya Sae'fael to the status of Fateweaver has led to the belief that Lyanna Llorelin did in fact have a child, passing her abilities through the new Fateweaver's maternal line, the Sae'ithil. The Sae'ithil hold the title of heir apparent in this upset.
Fateseer contracts[]
While once reserved for only the head of each High House clan, the services of Fateseers can be bought by many affluent quessirs. Since the ascension of a Llorelin to the throne of Empress, it has become in vogue to have a Fateseer even if one isn't in a position of political import.
Most Fateseers are female, though the rare male has displayed a gift for the art. Prospective Fateseers are sussed out as children and schooled in their divination crafts, court etiquette, and political strategy to make them competent fledgling advisers. Upon their adulthood birthday, the Fateseer's contract is optioned out to the High Houses. Highborn Fateseers, historically those of the Sae'fael and of direct relation to the current head of clan Llorelin, often fetch high sums and are placed within selu'quessir clans to further their training under the current, elder Fateseer for the last years of their own contract.
Lower born and bastard born Fateseers of the Sae'ithil and Sae'el will often end up placed in lower capacities and lesser known clans. These are more often than not the Fateseers contracted to bored lesser nobles.
Three families of Llorelin[]
The Sae'fael have held the head of House Llorelin since its creation. They produce the largest amount of divination-inclined members and have priority when it comes to contracts.
The Sae'ithil are the secondary family. They often find themselves in service positions as they produce less Fateseers.
The Sae'el are those born outside of marriage. Being in contact so often with other clans, dalliances occur with more visibility than a secret nighttime romp at a brothel. These unplanned situations result in the charge's contract being terminated and the Fateseer removed from their employ. If the Fateseer in question was male, the child is expected to be surrendered to the Llorelin upon birth. These children are raised within the clan, not allowed to know the specifics of their mixed parentage so as to avoid any political entanglements.
House Llorelin is the only quessir clan who recognize and name their half-blood children for the clan.
Relationships[]
While their skills are very necessary and traditionally respected in Lloraelian society, the Llorelins themselves are rarely held in such esteem. Many Fateseers are regarded as little more than objects by most other clans.
Llorelin children are taught with a heavy hand to maintain a professional distance from the other clans. Very rarely are there marriages outside of the clan, and most of these are to smaller clans. The friendship and eventual wedding between Prince Amrynn Anormatha and Sarya Sae'fael was a huge social upset that has already become something of a fairy tale.
Appearance[]
Those of the Llorelin clan are born with varying shades of light brown and dark blonde, wavy hair, but their upbringing on the shores of crystal-filled violet lake at Fae'tel invariably leeches their hair to shades of pink, mauve, and purple. Eyes are usually lavender within the Sae'fael, indigo within the Sae'ithil, and blue in the Sae'el.
Despite being sele'quessir, their position at the elbow of many upper class quessir encourages most Llorelin to develop well-dressed, if muted, sensibilities. Long dresses, flowing clothing elements, and crystal adorned jewelry are common. Even when dressed for adventure or danger, Llorelin tend to put form over function.
Character creation tips[]
- Llorelin are rather exclusively spellcasters of some sort, though this can range from arcane wizards to divine oracles and clerics. If your Llorelin is martial, consider how and why they got this sort of training.
- Llorelin are infamous for being kept at the beck and call of other Houses. As an adventurer, consider why you are out exploring instead of fulfilling your familial contract. Have you run away to escape such obligation? Are you on a quest at the behest of your assigned charge? Is your charge another quessir in the party?
